The Earth Swan Sings Again

Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) Hey hey, surprise! A new Ashley Reaks album! An indispensable purchase. Fans of Maria Jardardottir, take note: Alas, she's not singing on this album (well, there are some uncredited female vocals at the end of "The Embers Of Tomorrow"). However, Joel Purnell's saxophones are here again. Still it's a typical Ashley Reaks work - maybe not as weird and surprising as previous ones, but a pleasure to the ears anyway. Favorite track: Blackness Closed Against The Summertime.

1.
Mother is but a fragment of everything. Echoes wince inside her shimmering agony. I walk around and run my fingers through her sickness. Echoes wince inside her shimmering agony. She smiles in silence I’m disappointed. I’ve got to get out of the basement. I can see her right behind me I can see her
2.
She stretches open like a parasite’s echo. Her black roots are smouldering Skinny-dipping in the afternoon We all dissolve together We exchange deep kisses in the thunderstorm We exchange deep kisses Every inch of me withdraws I’m following her closely I want to smell her mystery She’s like a curse to me Sunken heart sunken cheeks silent heartbeat Her skin like a pricked balloon Sunken heart sunken cheeks silent heartbeat We all dissolve together I fear I hope I burn She stretches open like a parasite’s echo. She stretches open like a parasite
3.
A pair of frozen stick-things were screwed in my mummy's head. I stroked her like a leper and sprayed her with whispers. Her face was caked in concrete, her body was long time dead Her psychic energy was overwhelming Something cracked open that wasn’t my fault. My body dancing in turbulent waves Absence fills the room as we grow breathless We promised ourselves that we wouldn't fall apart again. Two little children waiting for the end
4.
The earth swan sings again I think you'd enjoy the dark forest Crackling light plucking the strings of the ancient world Twilight mists in the sunlight Frozen wings scattered lonelier than heroes The earth swan sings again Falling statues struggling with the marble crag until it bursts Mountains imprisoned in themselves, rustling among the pine trees A swan beating his wings upon the birches A leopard wiping away the heat of the desert A zebra whistling tunes to the thunderstorms The earth swan sings again Good things come from purity and innocence
5.
I cut the tattered streets with a long-hooked knife There’s pre-historic beasts on the hills and the plains Thunderstorms in the morning Silent screaming at night I insert my hand and rub the juices on the mirror I’m on the Northern shore Playing dead with my lover The old lady steps out of the fire To do her morning prayers Dead birds singing nature’s blues Her body convulsed
6.
There’s something secret and magical about confusion. Tinkering in the swallowing Spring Snaky afternoons in the dry desert dancing I love the sound of her murmering Blackness closed against the summertime Her plaintive empty voice like dangerous rain Riding out into the great unknown Blackness closed against the summertime Vultures crawl I wake up in a meadow in a hollow tree My mother’s hiding deep inside a prisoner’s heart Her soft hands are in the slums echoing Nature kisses the bodies on the ground Blackness closed against the summertime
7.
The embers of tomorrow Circus workers wandering round the human race We’re the eyes of the young Stinking stingray stung me on my stupid face In the light of the sun The embers of tomorrow Demons dig dead insects drifting ‘neath the green We’re the eyes of the young Trapped inside a dungeon deep beneath the dream In the light of the sun Come with me Wear a fishes old ghost and the force Come with me Wear a fishes old ghost Doves jettison into clouds The embers of tomorrow
8.
Born-again Christians swim at the nice I’m stuck forever frozen in time Old men are weeping all day and all night Sunflowers wilting out in the light Dark shadows pose like figurines Under crumbling bridges The fire of time, the fearless now Waking the monster up Flies are crawling over meat People with no history Boiling with humanity (sunflowers wilting) Tiny fractures in the chain No way out there’s no escape Debris dripping down the drain (sunflowers wilting) Blood falls from Heaven as we move forward Sadness sits by me expanding in size Drag along shadows our antennae blunted I’m lost forever I’m frozen in time Born-again Christians swim at the nice I’m stuck forever frozen in time Old men are weeping all day and all night Sunflowers wilting out in the light
9.
Insects drifting through the haze of eleven summer days. Mosquitoes clinging to the light Hide the shadows of the night Secret soil hallowed with age Sparrows flying far away Flying high and flying low To the shadowy beyond Landscapes thronged with souls unseen Souls sluiced out and my heart mopped clean In the desert we wait and we weep Today hurts more than mercy. Her electric pink hair drips drizzle on her face The ghostly night tracks like twinkling dreams Today hurts more than mercy Today hurts
